In the 1800s Bergen was Europe’s biggest wooden city, a distinctive city environment with closely spaced wooden buildings, busy streets, markets and alleys. At old Bergen open air Museum you can experience some of this atmosphere, with houses from the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries. What did it look like? What did people talk about? In beautiful natural surroundings you can meet both masters and servants from the past. You can peek in windows, open doors, and walk into exhibitions and historical interiors. The museum’s role players help to bring the site to life and provide answers to some of the questions on how life could have been lived in Bergen one or two hundred years ago. Park open 24/7

I use a portable mobility scooter for travel. It’s electric but is not great on steep hills. Is there any part of this reconstructed town that I might be able to navigate by scooter. I have done cobblestones in several European cities . . . not too comfortable, but I was able to manage for short visits. Thanks for any information you can provide.

Hi BW96, you would need to tell me a bit more about it... can you walk inside with some few stairs...? would be sad if you couldnt watch into the buildings... what is steep...which kind of angle are we talking about...? Gamle Bergen is a unique place, especially after 11:00 in the morning with all the actors... it is cobblestones... but it might be possible to get into from the exit where it is not so steep... just get somebody to talk to the recepsionist... hope you can manage the visit and wihs you a wonderful holiday here in Bergen many greetings Jan

Get the Bergen Card from the Tourist Information center. Admission to this museum along with other places AND public transport will be free with the ticket. My wife and I visited all the places within 1 day and used the pass (Bergen Card) even on the Light Rail to get out to the Stave church out in Paradis. Bus #3,4,5,6 and 83 which travels through Bergen, can pick you up right from Bryggen. You want to get off on Gamle and walk UNDER the motorway following the signs once you get over to the other side of the motorway. Getting back is easy peasy as the bus taking you back into town doesn't require getting over to the other side of the motorway.
Hey! Wondering if this place is open for visitors also outside the high season. VisitBergen website gives prices only for the period 15.5.-31.8., what is the case for example this week? What are the opening hours? Thank you!
