Indian opposition leader Arvind Kejriwal picked Delhi minister Atishi to replace him as chief minister of the capital territory on Tuesday, allowing him to focus on winning a fresh mandate in elections due next year after getting bail in a graft case.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi is likely to take oath on Saturday as Delhi’s second AAP Chief Minister, and third woman CM — after Sheila Dikshit of Congress and Sushma Swaraj of BJP — as Lt Governor V.

When Atishi takes oath as Delhi Chief Minister on September 21, she will become only the third woman in history to achieve this milestone, following Sushma Swaraj and Sheila Dikshit. Her rise is critical for AAP as they prepare for upcoming elections and fast-track pending policies.

The party had previously announced that only Atishi would take oath, however, it was later decided that her council of ministers would also take the oath.

"Atishi will take oath as the Chief Minister of Delhi on September 21, other ministers will also take their oaths alongside her," the Aam Aadmi Party said in a statement.

Lieutenant governor Vinai Kumar Saxena on Wednesday sent the file on the appointment of the chief minister to the President for approval, proposing Saturday for the swearing-in ceremony
