The Metro Richmond Zoo has a brand-new member -- and you can help decide her name. On Dec. 9, just two weeks before Christmas, a baby pygmy hippo was born at the zoo in Richmond, Virginia.
“This birth was unique as it was the first time Iris gave birth in water,” the zoo said. “While common hippos usually give birth underwater, pygmy hippo calves can be born on land or in water.
The Metro Richmond Zoo, the only place in Virginia to see hippos, said that pygmy hippos are an endangered West African species with less than 2,500 mature hippos remaining in the wild.
