ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Tuesday that the San Francisco 49ers and Trent Williams "are struggling to find a contractual solution" since he is scheduled to carry a $39 million cap hit in 2026. "If the two sides can't bridge their differences in their standoff, Williams would be expected to join this year's free-agent class," Schefter wrote.
If released, Williams would become one of the most coveted free agents on the market for contenders seeking to upgrade their offensive line.
