Instagram has increased its security settings for teenage users. Meta, the social media platform’s parent company, has tried to combat criticism about the amount of harmful content it shows to users under the age of 18 by employing more stringent measures.

Meta, Instagram’s parent company, announced on Tuesday that it will begin rolling out its “teen accounts” feature, which aims to put all teens — including those who may try to lie about their ages — into private accounts that can be messaged, tagged or mentioned only by people they already follow in an effort to manage how minors use social media.

The “new features do not impact what we believe to be the most significant risk of teen Instagram use,” one advocate said.
