Milanović remains Croatia’s most popular politician, his history of pro-Moscow and anti-Western statements contrasting with his having overseen the nation’s 2013 accession to the European Union as its then-prime minister. He previously won the presidency in 2020 with the support of Croatia’s main opposition Social Democratic Party (SDP).
Zoran Milanović took more than 74% of the vote and Dragan Primorac, backed by the centre-right HDZ party that governs Croatia, almost 26%.
Croatia's media enjoy a high degree of independence. Croatian Radio-TV, HRT, is the state-owned public broadcaster and is financed by advertising and a licence fee. Public TV is still the main source of news and information, but HRT is losing audience share and privately-owned Nova TV is now the top station.
