Indigenous activist Leonard Peltier, whose life sentence for killing two FBI agents was commuted by then-President Biden, has been released from a high-security Florida prison.

SUMTERVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Native American activist Leonard Peltier was released from a Florida prison on Tuesday, weeks after then-President Joe Biden angered law enforcement officials by commuting his life sentence in the 1975 killings of two FBI agents.

Indigenous activists who maintain his innocence celebrated the release as a decades-overdue victory, while law enforcement officials called it a mistake.

Then-President Biden commuted Peltier’s sentence during his last hours in office, noting he had spent most of his life in prison and was now in ill health.

Mr. Peltier’s murder conviction and two life sentences, stemming from a 1975 shootout with F.B.I. agents on a reservation, have been widely criticized.

Peltier's imprisonment had symbolized systemic injustice for Native Americans across the country who believe in his innocence.
