In Amsterdam, Dutch chipmaking equipment company ASML slid 7%. In Tokyo, Japan’s Softbank Group Corp. lost 8.3% to pull closer to where it was before leaping on an announcement trumpeted by the White House that it was joining a partnership to invest up to $500 billion in AI infrastructure.

U.S. tech stocks, including Nvidia, Oracle and Google, plummeted Monday after Chinese startup DeepSeek said it created an AI system that can compete against chatbots such as OpenAI's ChatGPT at much lower costs.

DeepSeek released an open-source artificial intelligence model in December, saying it took only two months and less than $6 million to create it.
