He was the eldest child of Benjamin Franklin Stroud and Elizabeth Jane (née McCartney), a divorcee with two daughters from a previous marriage. The Strouds had a second son, born two years after Robert.

According to police reports, he knocked von Dahmer unconscious and then shot him. As Alaska was then a United States territory, Stroud was prosecuted in the federal courts, where he was found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to 12 years in the federal penitentiary at McNeil Island, Washington. Nov 7, 2024 · In 1909, Stroud committed his first murder when he shot a bartender dead. While incarcerated for the crime, Stroud gained a reputation for being a heartless and violent man. In 1916, Stroud earned himself a death sentence after fatally stabbing a prison guard.

Following the shooting, Robert walked into the office of the Juneau City Marshal where he turned himself in. He was immediately put in jail to await trial for murder. Robert Stroud, known as the Birdman of Alcatraz, spent most of his life in prison studying birds and bird diseases.
