Revenants were outlaws that had been killed by Wyatt Earp and resurrected as demons due to the Earp Curse. There were supposedly 77 total revenants. Originally, the only way to stop the curse was for the Earp Heir to shoot all the revenants between their eyes with Peacemaker.

Part of the Earp curse is that every generation, 77 of Wyatt Earp's kills (called Revenants) return from Hell to RAISE Hell in Purgatory. It's up to Wynonna to banish them back to the underworld, but only her gun, Peacemaker, can do that.
