Diseases of Canaries is a 1933 book by Robert Stroud, better known by his prison nickname of "The Bird Man of Alcatraz". He wrote it while serving a life sentence at Leavenworth Penitentiary. [1]

Contemporary experts disagree over whether Stroud’s remedies are truly effective, however they were quite well received at the time. Robert Stroud’s research was largely focused on canaries. Over the years, he raised nearly 300 canaries in his cells and wrote two books, Diseases of Canaries, and a later edition, Stroud’s Digest on the Diseases of Birds. He made several important contributions to avian pathology, most notably a cure for the hemorrhagic septicemia family of diseases.
