Millions of shells were fired leading up to the big battles of World War 1. The empty shell casings became a logistical nightmare for the armies of #WW1. Efforts were made to ship the shells back to the factories were they could be recycled but in the fog of war some were left in the field. In a New-York Tribune Aug 31 1919 "Pile of shells cost the British government $25 each ($450 in 2025).
